Ibn Al-Razzaz Al-Jazari

The father of modern-day engineering and Badi’ al-Zaman Ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari is Abu al-Izz ibn Ismail ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari , an Arab scientist, craftsman, mechanical engineer and inventor who lived his life in the period between (1136-1206 AD). The castle clock, which is considered the largest astronomical clock invented, included a display of the zodiac, solar and lunar orbits, as well as timekeeping, and many other clocks.

Al-Jazari linked experiments and theoretical study, so he relied heavily on scientific facts and technological expertise. Among the most prominent works of Al-Jazari are:

  • Horn pump and buckets, which is a type of falling machine that gives a kinetic output as a result of water falling on the ladles, so that the water is lifted through dams or other water sources.
  • Many water clocks, such as the scribe's clock, the elephant's clock, the drummer's clock, and the skillful archer's clock, which took their name from their apparent shape, for example, an elephant clock is in the shape of an elephant and so on.
  • Hydraulic tools.
  • Self-propelled machines.
  • A pump with two opposite cylinders, which is equivalent to the piston and suction pumps of the current era.
  • Lots of watches that work the wicks of the jellyfish.
  • He described many other mechanical machines such as a conveyor, a drive, a compressor, and a crane, and he also described in detail the structure of the minute clocks, which took their name from their apparent shape.
  • Al-Jazari is credited with creating the first forms of a programmable humanoid robot and has been described as the father of robotics.

Ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari’s book (A Knowledge of Creative Mechanical Devices) was divided into six types comprising 50 different types of devices, including:

  • Ten fountains and musical instruments.
  • Five different designs of water lifting machines.
  • Five assorted locksmiths and field measuring instruments.
  • Ten designs of water dispensers for ablution and water shedding devices.
  • Ten designs of automata ships that dispense wine and water for drinking sessions.
  • Al-Jazari mechanical machines include water-lifting machines, crankshafts, and connecting rods.
  • Al-Jazari's self-propelled machines such as the automated waitress doll, the moving automatic peacock, the invention of the first known automatic gates propelled by hydroelectric power.
